VERY RARE Royal Doulton Figurine The Beggar HN526 Beggar's Opera GREAT COLOR. This impressive Royal Doulton figurine The Beggar HN526 was designed by Leslie Harradine in 1921 and was in production until 1949. 6 1/2 inches tall and is from The Beggars Opera.

A character from John Gays The Beggars Opera, the Beggar was thought to be the author himself. The Beggars Opera is a ballad opera in three acts written in 1728 by John Gay. It is the only example of the once thriving genre of satirical ballad opera to remain popular today. In 1920, The Beggars Opera began an astonishing run of 1,463 performances at the Lyric Theatre in Hammersmith, London, which was one of the longest runs in history for any piece of musical theatre at that time. Harradine brilliantly captures the drama of some of the characters in the series that pays homage to the classic ballad opera. This Royal Doulton Beggar figure is in very good used vintage condition. There are no chips, breaks, or repairs. There is a faint 1/2 hairline on the base, see photos.
