Very RARE Pair Royal Doulton Art Nouveau Arts & Craft Jardinieres & Pedestals
What we have are an impossible to find matched pair of Royal Doulton Art Nouveau Jardinieres and Pedestals. This is the kind of thing you would see on the set of an Agatha Christie movie except in such a movie they would contain aspidistras. Finding one jardiniere and its pedestal is rare enough.
That a pair have survived, in the condition these two are in for over a 100 years is remarkable. We hesitate to use the word original condition in our descriptions, and never the word perfect, but all these pieces are as far as we can judge, apart from some light crazing in wonderful condition and little changed from how they would have been a century ago.
All pieces carry the Lion and Crown mark introduced to mark the grant of the Royal Warrant by King Edward VII. This mark was used for the period from 1902 to 1922 which would align with the period in which Art Nouveau was at the height of its popularity. There are a number of other marks, and somebody with more expertise than us may be able to identify the artist responsible for the design.
We would welcome any advice. As you can see from the photos, the first jardiniere shown has, what appear to be cracks on bottom. However, as you can see from the photo of inside, these appear to be more in the nature of ridges or grooves formed on the bottom during firing and they do not go through to other side. The jardiniere is completely watertight. There is, what we think is an artist mark on bottom.
Any help identifying him or her would be appreciated. The second jardiniere has no issues. These are large and impressive pieces as you can see from the dimensions which are as follows.
The height from floor to the top of the Jardinieres is 34 1/2 inches. The height from floor to the top of the pedestals is 23 1/2 inches.The jardinieres are 11 inches tall. The jardinieres are 10 1/2 inches across top opening. The jardinieres are approximately 13 inches across the widest point.
