Very Rare Pair Of Vaseline Glass Koi Fish Dolphin Candlesticks Mma Reproduction
The one price is for both candlesticks. They are the 10 5/8 Inch Flat Base Dolphin Candlesticks made by the Imperial Glass Company from the 1972 to the 1983 in their famous vaseline canary color which glows under ultra violet light as seen in the photographs. They are actually copies of the famous original Boston & Sandwich Glass Co. The Dolphin Candlesticks were first made from 1845 until 1870 using their traditional 6 petal candle holder and then gluing their 6 panel connecting socket to the dolphin base, which was originally hollow.
These reproductions have a solid bottom dolphin, and a fused wafer connection, and only have a 1-tiered base, and not the original 2-tiered base. MMA owns the reproduction mold being shown here. In fact, Heisey Glass Co. Also made a reproduction from the original Boston & Sandwich molds from 1925 to 1939, but theirs were only 10 inches high and the dolphin sat on a 4 1/4 inch square base, and Heisey never made it in the vaseline canary yellow color.
Even though these are reproductions, I only wish I had more, because they are so gorgeous. As I said, each candlestick measures 10 5/8 inches tall, has a 7/8 inch top opening that fits a standard candle, and has a square bottom measuring about 3 5/8 inches across, with the diagonal measuring 5 inches.
I found them sitting inside a closed dining room cabinet where they apparently sat on a shelf for many years, and were hardly used. I have been collecting unusual vintage objects for many years, and always to describe the items as best as I can.
One candlestick is perfect; the other has a very tiny 3/16 inch chip which I originally thought was just a rough molding. But upon further inspection, it now looks like a very tiny chip to the base; in fact when placed on a table, it is almost impossible to see unless you are looking for it, but you can definitely feel it with you finger. I tried to show it in the last 3 pictures, but it's so small that it really hard to see.
Except for that extremely small chip to its bottom, I don't see any other chips, or scratches, fleabites, cracks, stains, cloudiness, or repairs anywhere. They come from a smoke-free home.
