Royal Copenhagen Jul 1940 Christmas plate Shepherd in the Desert Very Rare
This plate designed by Kaj Lange shows Christ as the Shepherd at peace in the desert with both the sheep and the wolf. The design is understood to probably be a reflection on John 10:11-18, since Denmark was under German occupation. The cobalt blue underglaze process helps makes this scene look three-dimensional.

This plate is in beautiful condition. This plate, like all the Royal Copenhagen Christmas plates, was cast in limited quantities during the year on the plate. Then the mold was destroyed to prevent further copies from being made.

The stamp of the Royal Copenhagen Porcelain Manufactory, the three wavy lines under the crown stamp, along with the mark of the painter, guarantee the plate's authenticity. The 7 1/4 diameter plate has two holes for hanging drilled in the back during production.
