Luitpold was the younger brother of King Maximilian II of Bavaria and served as the Prince Regent from 1886 until his death in 1912. He joined the Bavarian Army at age 14 and was promoted to captain of the artillery in 1835. Luitpold's 26-year regency is considered a "golden age" for Bavaria, with Munich becoming a center of culture under his patronage. The photograph was taken by Joseph Albert, a Bavarian photographer to the royal court.
